August/31/12: MCHS Varsity Football vs Luray. Madison defeats the Bulldogs 13-7 on touchdowns by Logan Carpenter and Ashton Weakley. The Varsity Football team picked up their first win of the season last night in their home opener against Luray 13-7.
The game was a defensive battle all night with the Mountaineers getting stop after stop throughout the game. The Bulldogs lone score came after a fumbled punt return by Madison with 2:06 left in the 1st quarter. Luray recovered the fumble and went 32 yards in 3 plays for the score.
Madison would tie the game at 7 with 9:37 remaining in the half on a nice 24 yard run by Logan Carpenter. Dylan Berry added the extra point to make it a 7-7 game.
The Mountaineers scored at the end of the 3rd quarter on a halfback pass from Maurice Gentry to Ashton Weakley that coverd 31 yards but missed the extra point to make the score 13-7 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Their was no scoring in the 4th quarter but still plenty of defensive action as Madison came up with stop after stop to secure the win. For the game Madisons defense had 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, forced 2 fumbles and blocked a punt.
J.P. Utz led the defense with 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Demaun MInor also had 7 tackles on the night. Logan Carpenter also had 7 tackles, blocked a punt and recovered a fumble to go along with his touchdown run. Bray Lamb chipped in with 5 tackles as well. Collin Shifflett and Ashton Weakley both had an interception.
Gentry carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards and threw once for 31 yards and a touchdown. Carpenter ran 7 times for 55 yards and a score. James Graves was 6-13 passing for 69 yards. Ashton Weakley caught 3 passes for 48 yards and a TD, Gentry had 1 catch for 11 yards and Sam Taylor had 2 catches for 41 yards.
