MCHS Varsity Volleyball .vs William Monroe .9/2/09, The Mountaineer Varsity squad won its first game of the season Wednesday night, September 2, against William Monroe High School. From the first serve, the Dragons came on strong, stunning the Mountaineers in a few kills from Alex Cave. Error upon error stuck the Mountaineers in a deficit of as many as 10 points. And then Tori Puryear stepped to the service line... Knocking down ace after ace, the Mountaineers rallied on her serve, finally getting from 7-17 to 14-17. The Mountaineers worked their way as close as 15-18, but again, unforced errors caused the Mountaineers to drop game 1 25-16.. .Game 2 was another story. After a quick set of line up changes, the Mountaineers were able to get into a rhythm. Excellent passing from Caitlyn Ford helped Jordan set up the Tori Puryear attack. Digs from Ellie Hill and Samantha Cubbage fended off the Dragon attack. The Madison squad was clicking. In the end, the Mountaineers won the hard-fought battle 25-19, 25-20, and 25-22.. .Tori Puryear led the Mountaineers with 15 kills, 11 aces, and 7 blocks. Setter Jordan Aylor had 20 assists and 11 digs. Ellie Hill was also a defensive standout with 10 digs. Libero Caitlyn Ford also had a fantastic night passing with a 2.4 pass rating (out of 3.0) and 7 digs. Ford and Cubbage were also strong from the service line, both serving 100% on the evening.
